If any of you are like me, you have a terrible time finding Halloween costumes for your growing girls. Eventually, they get a little big for ladybugs, butterflies and angels and they are ready to branch out into different costumes. But, just because she's wearing adult sizes now, does not mean I want her looking like this!
By the way...if you could get past the fact that her boobs were about to explode out of her outfit, this is a Ghostbusters costume. Really?? I'd love to see Dan Aykroyd in this!
I have always struggled with finding costumes for Jordan since she has always been tall for her age. We always had to buy "up" a size or two to get them to fit. Unfortunately, that meant buying girls sizes when she was still a toddler...tween sizes when she was still a little girl...and now adult sizes when she's just 14. Although, I've told her that she's about max-ed out the age when she should be trick-or-treating anyways - so this won't be a problem for much longer. This is probably her last year. But, I know there are other mom's out there that are having a hard time too. For some reason, the costume makers think we all want to look "sexy". I can't tell you how many "sexy" costumes are out there. It's in the name too! Sexynurse, sexy flight attendant, sexy witch, the list goes on. This is NOT okay for our kids!! It is sending all the wrong messages to our girls! Here are a few examples of Jordan's costumes over the past few Halloweens.
Apparently, I didn't take any pictures of her costume from last year (age 13) that showed the whole outfit, but this was it. Super cute...not too short. We loved it!
This was her costume the year before at , at age 12. Super cute but yet still modest. We had a ton of fun loading on the gold eye shadow and the fake eyelashes.
Halloween, age 11.
Halloween, age 10.
Definitely, my favorite...Halloween, age 9.
I thought we've done a pretty good job keeping her costumes fun yet modest. On the other hand, I want to show you just a few of the "options" for our girls... (((Just a side note...these are all found under the "teen" costumes.)))
Little Miss Riding Hood
Sexy Supergirl
Spanish Senorita
Unicorn
Obviously, these are a HUGE"I DON"T THINK SO!!" from me. Tooshort...too "sexy" and not at all appropriate for our teenage girls to be wearing.
Am I saying that no one e.v.e.r should wear these? Not at all...it's not my place to tell anyone (other than MY child) what they can and cannot wear. Obviously, these would look much different on an 18 or 19 year old than on a 13 or 14 year old...but I still think they look a little on the hoochy side no matter what the age. That's not to say there aren't cute costumes out there. There are. But you have to wade through a lot of bad ones to get to the good ones. And I seriously mean A LOT! I searched for a while this afternoon and was only able to find a few that I both 1) thought my daughter would want to wear and 2) that I would be comfortable buying for her. Here are a few...
This raccoon was super cute, I thought. The boots aren't included, but I think everything else is.
The Sock Hop one was really cute too. Not too short but still fun!
Some might thing this one is a little cheesy, but I think this girl's Captain America costume is super cute!
Other than the Raccoon one, this Thor costume is my favorite.
The modest costume ARE out there. You just have to be diligent to find them and not just give up and go the easy way out.
Thankfully, this year Jordan and a friend are dressing up like Katniss and Rue from the Hunger Games - which means cargo pants and a vest, maybe a bow and arrow. That's my kind of costume!
Good luck to you all. And when in doubt...you can't have too many Wonder Women out there! :)
I made it to Day 30! But, such a hard one to end on!
So many to choose from:
The Chronicles Of Narnia
Bedknobs & Broomsticks
Mary Poppins
Pirates of the Caribbean
Pollyanna
The Gnome Mobile
The North Avenue Irregulars
The Santa Clause
The Parent Trap
I feel like I've mentioned a few already. The Parent Trap was my Favorite Disney Classic (Day 18). Mary Poppins was mentioned as Favorite Heroine (Day 4) and Favorite Scene (Day 27). I almost feel like I should mention a different one here.
So, although this might not be my Favorite-Favorite...because that might have already been mentioned. This is definitely one I enjoy. I think the story is great and I really enjoy it.
Not a lot of Disney movies make me cry. But, this one...I was tearing up at the opening credits and song. This is also one of the few that I've seen at the movie theater. But the opening was just so beautiful and realistic...it was just amazing.
I had to go with an oldie - but a goodie. :) I had already mentioned The Emperor's New Groove...twice - so you obviously know I like that one. But, I find this one funny too.
I had to think long and hard on this one. There are definitely Disney movies that I like more than others. Just because I don't like it doesn't necessarily mean that they are overrated. I think it means that it doesn't live up to the hype - and in that sense, I had to pick...
Lilo And Stitch
I just felt this movie was aimed at the 4 and under crowd more than the whole family. I didn't enjoy this one at all.
I really liked this movie. We saw it in the theater when it first came out. It was actually Jordan's first movie to ever go to - although she was only about 6 weeks old at the time...it still counts. :) I liked it then and I like it now.
I really enjoyed this one. I think they took it to a whole new level. New story. New characters. Yet kept the essence of Toy Story and those toys we love.
Apparently, Myles was having a little too much fun playing frisbee with the other kids before Jordan's softball game on Thursday and ran head first into a electrical transformer. Ouch.
I don't necessarily have anything against this film. Jordan actually likes it and we own it. I just think in the grand collection of Pixar films...this one just doesn't stack up.
I mean...come on...they didn't even make a sequel.
And they make a sequel for e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. lol
I know this clip is from the 2000 re-make/re-boot - but it's all the same to me. I know that there are a lot out there that love these, but I just don't get the appeal.
I guess I could have picked a live-action movie and this might have been easier. But, I find that the live-action Disney movies tend to be more in the line of comedy instead of romance. The downside...I don't find cartoon kisses very exciting. lol
But, if I must pick one...I guess this one is the best. They seemed to have worked the hardest to get to the end.
It would be so easy to throw out "It's A Small World" as it is the epitome of annoying Disney songs, but I am trying to stick to the movie songs, so I had to go with this one.
Snow White
It's just so whiny and soo much vibrato and really screechy. I'm just not a fan.
This one was a hard one! So many to choose from. A Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid??Can You Feel The Love Tonight from The Lion King??Kiss the Girl from The Little Mermaid??Reflection from Mulan??
And then there's this one... A Whole New World - Aladdin
I checked several internet lists for ideas for this one as I was having a really hard time coming up with one. Strangely, this was mentioned over and over as one of the "best" sidekicks. That just shows how people's opinions can differ. As soon as I saw this mentioned, I thought, "Yup...that's him. And boy is he annoying!"
Iago - Aladdin
It probably doesn't help that I'm not a Gilbert Gottfried fan.
You might say I cheated with this one. He's more of a main character than a sidekick. But...it's not his name on the movie - which makes him a sidekick.
Animals are everywhere in Disney movies. How can I possibly pick just one?? They have whole movies that are almost completely animals! (Bambi, Finding Nemo, Lion King, A Bug's Life, etc.) So, I had to think of someone who really stood out...who was really funny.
Then, it hit me... Kuzco as the llama - The Emperor's New Groove
He is hilarious! If you haven't seen this movie...See. It. Now.
I don't really care too much for the princes in Disney movies for the most part. They don't usually have a very big role and just kind of swoop in at the last moment and "save the day". This one is the first one that I noticed had a larger role in the movie and was kind of funny to boot...
I had to think about this one. I like all the Disney Princesses for different reasons. Sleeping Beauty, or Aurora, was probably my favorite growing up because she was just so fragile looking. I liked Jasmine for her exotic looks and she was just so different than those before her. But my favorite is one that I realized is just more like me. She loves her Daddy, she loves to read and for the most part can take care of herself. She stands up for herself and found love where she wasn't expecting it at all.
I really didn't have to think long on this one. This character is selfish, bratty and mean. And, if she was billed as a "bad guy", I probably wouldn't mind so much, but she is portrayed as this cute thing that little girls should dress up as and it really annoys me. I don't get the appeal...
I can't believe I'm doing another challenge...but here it goes. This one is an easy one...From the first moment I saw this character in the movie, she made me laugh. I love her.
Life has been filled as of late with surgery recovery, school supply shopping, Olympics and just general living.
October 2004
August 2012
Yesterday was the first 2-hour day of school. I can't believe Jordan is in high school. I still haven't managed to wrap my head around that yet.
In case you were unaware, as many were since I didn't tell anyone, I had surgery on my right ear again on July 26th. The cholesteotoma came back and, according to my ENT doctor, it was "massive". Surgery took about 6 1/2 hours and I am still recovering. They also widened my ear canal while they were in there and that is very painful. I believe the residual pain wasn't as bad the last time. This time...it's very very sore. It doesn't help that the children keep whacking me in the ear. :/
I didn't tell people about the surgery, other than my family, co-workers and a dear friend that has dealt with the same surgery. I didn't want people to feel sorry for me, pity me, or just draw attention to myself. I don't know why I felt that way. The only reason my church family knew about it was that my dad felt the need to put out a prayer request email two days before the surgery. Although I was unsure at first, I am so glad he did that. The outpouring of prayers and the assistance of meals was wonderful and I am so thankful for that. I guess I don't know everything after all. :)
As I recover, I am so emotionally wound-up lately and that is so unlike me. I have been known to just tear up at the drop of a hat lately. I have so many thoughts running through my mind: will my hearing get much worse because of this surgery, will it come back at all, will Jordan get off to a great start this year - her first year in high school, will Myles enjoy 2nd grade as much as he loved 1st grade, and, lastly, will the pain of losing Dasya ever get easier.
I just decided to write her a letter:
My precious baby girl,
I miss you so so much. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about you, miss you, and wonder when I will see you again.
I still struggle with the "fairness" of it all. Was it "fair" that you were taken from us? Why us?? What did I do wrong??
I have gotten through the anger about your death although just thinking about you can make me sob with grief. But now, I don't think the sadness is anger-driven, I think it is just the thoughts of "what might have been". I think about all the things we have missed out on with you: your first words, first steps, first days of school. I think about what you would be like.
What would you look like? Would you be the image of Jordan and Myles - who look so much like each other? I think you would since you all were so similar looking when you were all born.
Would you and Jordan be the best of friends? You are 17 today and she's 14 1/2. That could make for best friends, or a lot of sibling rivalry. :)
Would you be taller than me too? Your sister has already passed me up by about a half an inch.
Would you love sports? Jordan loves softball and is thinking about going out for the swim team. Myles is all about sports, especially baseball and football...and wrestling, and boxing, and basketball. He loves it all.
Would you have a boyfriend? Be thinking about what college you'd go to? Be excited about your senior year of high school?
It's the trivial stuff I think about most...just the day-to-day things of childhood. I miss you more that you could possibly know. I miss you so much. I can't wait until I see you again.
I love you more than words can express. Happy 17th birthday!
